Quote #1: "In the back of the van were three more dead bodies, two girls and a boy, their blood was all over the seats and ceiling of the van." Ishmael Beah, 12-13
The significance of this quote is what everyone who was in Sierra Leone had to live through during the war with the Rebels and the Sierra Leone Military. This relates to the role that Ishmael Beah he had to see this everyday when he was a rebel fighter. He saw many things that you can't even imagine is possible for example: People being killed, being burned alive, and people being raped.
Question#1: Would you be able to see this everyday: people being killed and burned and chopped up?
Quote#2:" Junior and I exchanged a look, and he gave me that smile he had held back when i was about was death." Ishmael Beah 36
Question #2: What do you think it was like to be Junior in that moment when they where about to kill Ishmael?
The significance of this quote is Ishmael came close to death and his brother could do nothing but watch him get killed until someone fired in a distance which saved Ishmael's life. That moment is like fate is guiding the Ishmael and his brother and friends to stay together. This also relates to the what role did the main character had in their home country, because the rebel soldiers were going to kill the Ishmael and others so that the recruits that were going into the Rebel's army so they would toughen up.
Ishmael in this story is a kid with a really big heart and big imagination and loves hip-hop like me that is how I connect with Ishmael and the hip-hop he likes is old school and I enjoy listening to old school hip-hop. The actions Ishmael has in this memoir is riveting and he is a kind gentle kid who wouldn't hurt a fly.

Quote #1 Response: I think that this part of the story was the most intense part so far. I also think that this event in Ishmael's life is one of the main reasons why when he is in America he can not let go of the bad memories. Events like this in the book are probably what he saw everyday while he was a child soldier.
Question #1 Answer: I would not be able to see this type of violence everyday. The reason is because there are no wars that are taking place here in America. Even outside of war you can see this but I have never seen it happening where I live.
Quote #2 Response: I think that the quotes that you chose were probably the two most memorable parts of his life, the first time that he witnessed war and the first time he came close to death. This quote was very sad because since the boys were captured and the one to die was going to be Ishmael, his older brother could only watch his little brother be murdered.
Question #2 Answer: I think that Junior was devastated to know that all he could do was sit there while his brother dies and knowing thst he would be next.
Quote 1: I do not know why all the quotes are about death but this is war. It is the most tragic thing in anyone's life, to see anyone die. Even if you are enemies, you cannot help but ask why you did that. Although if you did not kill them, they would have killed you, you would still show respect.
Answer 1: If your asking if i would commit suicide than no. But i could not bare the horror, everything in this world has to be done and if I had to kill someone, i would. If i had to witness a beheading, I would. Not to sound evil but I would rather him die than me.
Quote 2: I felt this was really a choice, his big brother was going to watch him die if he actually died. I felt that there was no choice for his big brother, he had to move on. If he stayed there and cried, he would have died. Those are moments were you really want to do something, but you can not.
Question 2: Junior knew that his brother was going to die, I'm sure he was screaming and crying on the inside, but he knew he could no do anything. He knew if he caused a scene, he would have died as well. He knew if his brother died, he would have to live with it.
Quote #1: I think this was a start of more of the bad things Ishmael will have to see. I think he might almost get used to seeing the blood though.
Question #1: I think some people, including myself would get used to it to a certain extent. It would never be easy to see a dead body or gore everywhere.
Quote #2: I think this quote really shows the sorrow of being taken away from a family member. Weather its death by war or natural causes, Theres a lot of the same emotion.
Question #2: I think Junior was smiling to tell how brave Ishmael was being. He was probably very upset on the inside but proud or his brother.
