A Long Way Gone Post #4

Quote#1:" We were dangerous, and Brainwashed to kill." Pg.134 Ishmael
Significance: This is saying that the boys were changed from the war. When the first started to fight in the war they all changed. All the boys have to learn how to not kill and that will be a journey on itself.
Character Judgment: Ishamel is a good kid he would be able to do the things he did in the war, and if he didn't fight in the war.
Question#1: Do you think that the boys would learn to forgive and stop fighting?
Quote#2:" I talked to her mainly about Bob Marley's lyrics and Run D.M.C's too." Ishmael, pg.163
Significance: When Ishmael does this he is reconnecting with his past before the war. The more he does that the more maybe he might get in touch with the past before the war.
Personal Connecetion: I would to my dad about some of the lyrics of Run D.M.C and others old school Hip-Hop. I can connect with Ishmael because we both like the same Hip-Hop.
Question#2: Do you think that Ishmael will ever remember his past before the war?

Quote #1: I think he was saying that all of the brainwashing made their brains not function like it use to. Their brain is now blocking off all that is good. Ishmael is saying that they are now wanting to kill instead of being forced to kill and the rebels are going to have a hard time controlling them.

Question #1: It is going to take a lot of therapy to get them out of this state. Right now they would be blocking off all people who are trying to turn them back to normal.

Quote #2: This is one moment where Ishmael is remembering all the good times he had before the war. He is reflecting his feelings then and now to the lyrics on the CD's. This is like poetry to him, he probably sung those songs and remixed the words too.

Quote #2: I think to this day, Ishmael is only remembering his past. He probably is trying to ignore all things that have to do with the war.

Quote #1: I think they have also been "brainwashed" to forget their past, and their morals that their parents have taught them.
Question #1: I think they will slowly be able to forgive their horrible past, but I think they will never be able to escape from their memories.

Quote #2: I agree that he is definately in touch with the days of when he was younger. But I dont think he has forgotten those parts of his childhood because I think they are still part of who he is today.
Question #2: I think that Ishmael may slowly start to remember his past if he remembers the horrible events. Right now its like he has built a barrier between him and his memories.

Quote #1: I feel bad for Ishmael because he knows that what he is doing is wrong but somehow the rebels make it seem like killing is right. I think that this is what Ishmael means by the rebels brainwashing him.
Question #1: I think that it is hard to say if the boys and all of the rebels will ever stop fighting. I hope that sometime the war will be over but Ishmael was lucky and escaped, some boys will never leave the rebels and so they wont get time to reflect on how what they did was wrong.
Quote #2: I agree with you on this quote and I think that you did a good job connecting this moment with his life before the war. I think that Ishmael was happy to be able to talk to someone about memories that reminded him about his brother and friends and his life when he didn't know what war was really like.
Question #2: I think that it makes Ishmael happy to talk about his life before the war.
